"Boston Cream Stack" - 8 x 8 inches - oil on canvas - SOLD

"Boston Cream Stack" - 8 x 8 inches - oil on canvas
I was recently hearing a lot of chatter about "National Doughnut Day" and didn't realize that it was actually a real thing.  Here is what I found out: "National Doughnut Day is on the first Friday of June each year, succeeding the Doughnut Day event created by The Salvation Army in 1938 to honor the women who served doughnuts to soldiers during World War I.

Because there was so much recent talk of donuts, I was inspired to paint this stack of Boston Cream Donuts.  I specifically picked the "Boston Cream" in honor of the Boston Bruins advancing to compete in the Stanley Cup playoffs....go Bruins!

"Nectarines" - 6 x 6 inches - oil on canvas

"Nectarines" - 6 x 6 inches - oil on canvas

I found this blue dish towel in the bottom of a drawer and just loved the smoky blue color.  I knew it would pair well with the orange nectarines and make for a dynamic painting.

Congratulations to Judy Quint for winning my May give-away!  Better late than never.  Since I was late, I decided to draw the June winner at the same time.  Congratulations to Mary Valente! "Sunlit Cherries" - 6 x 6 inches - oil on canvas

"Sunlit Cherries" - 6 x 6 inches - oil on canvas
I love when the weather gets warmer and there is a wide selection of fruits and veggies at the market. Unlike most folks, I buy food based on what inspires me to paint!

I started with a pink ground which I thought would compliment the red/purple cherries.  As always, I try to vary the color, placement and shape of each cherry to add variety and interest.

"Slices" - 6 x 6 inches - oil on canvas

"Slices" - 6 x 6 inches - oil on canvas
I rummaged through my refrigerator looking for inspiration and settled on this orange.  I arranged the slices and then used a strong light source to create some interesting shadows.  I then happily painted for a couple hours.

Wow!

I'm very grateful to live in a town that is so supportive of the arts.  The Parish Center for the Arts has been a big part of my life for the past 13 years.  Each year, the PCA hosts a wonderful art show that is open to anyone in the community who wants to participate.  Kids, adults, professionals and amateurs are all welcome to submit two pieces of artwork that are judged by professional artists.  The PCA throws a big reception with food and wine and awards are presented.  This year, I was honored to win "Best in Show" with my painting "There's Kit-Ten!"  I couldn't be more proud!!!
A colorful sculpture was created just for the event
Great food, wine and fun at the opening reception

So cool to have that "Best of Show" ribbon!

"There's Kit-Ten!" is a 20 inch square painting and is available for $500.  Click the Buy Now button below to purchase using a credit card/Paypal or here for other payment options.

"There's Kit-Ten" - 20 x 20 inches - oil on canvas

"There's Kit-Ten!"  - 20 x 20 inches - oil on canvas

For those who have followed my posts for a while, you may recall a painting I did called "Where's Kit-Ten?" Click here for the story behind that one.  Once again, I was on cat duty for my friend.  But this time was different!  Based on the painting, you can probably tell that I didn't completely bond with Kit-Ten but at least I got to see his furry backside!

"Museum Cupola" - 8 x 8 inches - oil on canvas

"Museum Cupola" - 8 x 8 inches - oil on canvas

Being an artist, I look at the world differently.  Instead of just seeing a house, I focus on shadows and colors and interesting shapes.  I am fortunate to live in a New England town with many charming buildings to inspire me.  The Westford Museum sits in our town center and I admire it each time I drive by...especially the cupola.   I love the pop of red color in contrast with the gray-green clapboards.

On a somber note, the Boston Marathon bombings were one of those wake-up calls where you take stock of all the good things in your life and count your blessings.  I am amazed, impressed and in awe of all the police officers, medical professionals, and good Samaritans who rushed to help.  These acts of kindness have restored my faith in humanity.

"Museum Cupola" is an 8 inch square painting and is available for $150.  Click the Buy Now button below to purchase using a credit card/Paypal or here for other payment options.

"Bose" - 6 x 6 inches - oil on canvas - SOLD

'Bose" - 6 x 6 inches - oil on canvas - SOLD
Unfortunately for me, I have a day job.  So far, all my attempts to win the lottery have failed so, until that happens, I'll keep working for that steady paycheck.  As you may have guessed, I work for Bose.

In other news, my painting, "Back Bay" was accepted into a juried show called "CCA in Bloom."  A floral designer will create a flower arrangement interpretation of my painting.  You can read details about the exhibit here.  I'll be very interested to see what they come up with and will share pictures in my next post.

"Unexpected Visit" - portrait in process

Last week, my daughter came home for a brief and unexpected visit.  Considering she currently lives in Alaska, this is a pretty big deal.  While I was cooking dinner, she sat on the kitchen floor, knitting, while we chatted it up.  I looked over at her and said, "Don't move!" and quickly grabbed my camera.  I thought this would make an excellent portrait.  Even better, Cooper, our dog, came over to see the fuss and I snapped a great shot of the two of them.  The painting is still in process but I thought I'd share my progress so far.

I started by painting my canvas with a thin wash of a pink acrylic paint.  I then used black art tape and red thread to make a grid on my canvas so that I could transfer my photo reference accurately.

After I refined my line drawing, I began to shade in the darker areas just to get a sense of the composition.  I'm still undecided on how to handle her scarf.  It is multicolored and I think it would be too distracting if I paint it as is.  Hmmm....

I started with the dark hair and my daughter's face since that is the most critical element of the painting.

The next thing I tackled were her hands.  Hands are really hard to do!  Stay tuned as I hope to finish the portrait later this week.

"Still Life with Grapes" - 8 x 8 inches - oil on canvas

"Still Life with Grapes" - 8 x 8 inches - oil on canvas
This painting is a bit of a departure for me.  I don't typically like to set up and arrange a still life.  I prefer to stumble upon something that catches my eye.  In any case, I really wanted to paint grapes so I bought a bunch at the market and then went about the task of trying to come up with a pleasing composition.  I added the jug as a compositional element for some height and additional interest.  The jug had a flower pattern on it but I liked the simplicity of keeping the jug one solid color.  I also like the color scheme of 2 basic colors - the red grapes with everything else as a version of white.  Purchase information is at the end of this post.

For those interested in my painting process, I included a photo (see below) of the start of this painting.  I began with a simple line drawing of the basic elements.  Then, using acrylic paint, I created an underpainting to map out the color scheme.  You can see a warm, brown tone in the back ground in contrast with the cool, blue tone in the front of the table at the bottom (which makes it appear as if it is in shadow).  Even though I covered most of the acrylic paint, I still allow some to shine through and to influence the final painting.  For example, to make the grapes as translucent as possible, I carefully added color in thin layers and didn't completely cover the acrylic base.

In other news, I'm co-hosting my final "Artists Helping Artists" radio show this week.  We're broadcasting early, Tuesday, March 26 at 7 p.m. E.S.T. since my co-host, Leslie Saeta, is traveling.  This week's topic is "Talking the Talk … How to Talk about Your Art and Make the Sale.”  To listen to this show, or, any previous shows, you can click here.

"Sweet Tooth" - 6 x 6 inches - oil on canvas

"Sweet Tooth" - 6 x 6 inches - oil on canvas
I arrived for my shift at Art on Main without a painting plan.  I looked around the gallery for inspiration and settled on these candies.  I really struggled with the composition in this one.  I arranged and then rearranged the candies.  I added different kinds and then took some away.  In the end, I'm pretty happy with the balance of colors and shapes.  In a way, they remind me of a school of fish. Purchase information is at the end of this post.

In other news, on Thursday, March 21 at noon E.S.T., I'll be co-hosting the "Artists Helping Artists" (AHA) radio show once again.  This week, we're interviewing Master Artist Carolyn Anderson.  It should prove to be an interesting show!  You can listen to the show by clicking here.  You can either listen live, or, the show is recorded and can be accessed at any time after the broadcast.  (You can also call 646-915-9243 to listen via phone during the broadcast).

"Vintage Bug" - 6 x 6 inches - oil on canvas

"Vintage Bug" - 6 x 6 inches - oil on canvas
I have a weakness for vintage VW bugs.  They remind me of my childhood.  I can remember seeing the advertisements where the price was only $1999.  Amazing.  I tried to keep this painting loose, simple and use minimal brushstrokes.  Purchase information is at the end of this post.

In other news, I'll be co-hosting the "Artists Helping Artists" radio show on Thursday, March 14 at noon (EST).  You can click here to listen to the show.  Once the show airs, you can still click the above link to listen to a recorded version.

"551" - 6 x 6 inches - oil on canvas - SOLD

"551" - 6 x 6 inches - oil on canvas
I was asked to paint the most adorable cabin which couldn't be much more than 100 square feet.  This little guy has a ton of character complete with a weathered look in soft greens and blues.

In other news, I'll be co-hosting the "Artists Helping Artists" radio broadcast at 9 a.m. E.S.T. on Thursday, March 7 with artist and marketing expert Leslie Saeta.   You can listen to the show by clicking here.  You can either listen live, or, the show is recorded and can be accessed at any time after the broadcast.

Our show is titled, "Team Up to Boost Your Art Career to the Next Level."  We'll be discussing how groups of artists can collaborate to form a peer mentoring group or a cooperative gallery to enhance their art careers.  I've officially made the co-host page - click here and scroll to the bottom of the page to see my photo and a brief bio.

"Back Bay" - 20 x 20 inches - oil on canvas"

"Back Bay" - 20 x 20 inches - oil on canvas
I finally finished the "Back Bay" painting that I had been working on for a while.  I had to let this painting marinate in my mind for some time before I figured out the approach that I wanted to take.  I originally had included more buildings but ended up cropping it closer. Even though this is clearly a painting of buildings, I like the abstract quality created by the large blocks of color. I was particularly interested in the reflections in the windows.  Purchase information is at the end of this post.

In other news, I will be co-hosting the "Artists Helping Artists" radio show for the month of March.  The show is live on Thursdays (usually at 12 p.m. EST) but this coming week will air at 8 a.m. EST.  You can find links to the current show (which isn't posted yet) and all the previous shows by clicking here.  I hosted the show on December 20, 2012 and if you'd like to listen, click here.  Support for the show has been steadily growing and there are now over 15,000 listeners!

"Back Bay" is a 20 inch square painting and is available for $400.  Click the Buy Now button below to purchase using a credit card/Paypal or here for other payment options.

Video of 2012 Paintings

Ok, so I got my act together to create a video of select paintings from 2012.  I'm doing much better than last year considering that my 2011 paintings video was created in August of 2012.  Click the image below to enjoy a 2 minute video:

In other news, I've been working on a painting that is in a larger format than I usually tackle.  It is 20 x 20 inches.  Here are some photos of my progress so far.  I hoping to finish it in the next couple of days.
I put a pencil grid on my canvas.  Using red paint, I start to sketch out the design using my photo as a reference.

I continue working block by block.  I like to use red paint as I sometimes let glimpses of it show through in the final painting.  I can always cover it if I want.

The line drawing is nearly complete.

I used acrylic paint to block out the basic color scheme.  Most of the acrylic paint will be covered by oil paint in the end product.

Working primarily from dark to light, I start putting in the large blocks of color for each building.

"Le Gourmet Jardin" - 8 x 8 inches - oil on canvas - SOLD

"Le Gourmet Jardin" - 8 x 8 inches - oil on canvas - SOLD

Sometimes when you throw good things out into the universe, you are repaid many times over.  I painted a similar painting some time ago and gave it to Marie, the owner of Le Gourmet Jardin, a charming shop which is connected to the Art on Main gallery.  Marie has been a good friend and I simply wanted to show my appreciation.

Marie kindly hung the painting in her shop for her customers to admire.  Since that time, several folks have fallen in love with the painting and have asked me to recreate it for them.  This is my third commission from the original painting.  Like I said, sometimes the universe will reward you many times over for a good deed.   So, once again, Marie, thank you.

"30 Paintings in 30 Days" - The Wrap Up

30 Paintings painted during January 2013

Now that the pressure is off, I wanted to reflect a bit on what I learned from the "30 Paintings in 30 Days" challenge.  So, here are some of my thoughts:

There is inspiration all around us.  Ordinary can be extraordinary.  Probably my favorite painting is "50 Shades of Gray" which is a bottle of hand sanitizer on the edge of the sink.  What is your favorite?

Sometimes the paint just flows, sometimes it doesn't.  There were a few paintings that were just effortless -- the painting of my dog Cooper is one example.  The honey bear and spoon painting was a struggle.

Too much pressure!  I really love to paint but didn't really like the pressure of having to produce on a daily basis.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.  I was surprised to get many compliments on some paintings that I didn't think were quite up to par and a few critical comments on paintings I really liked.

Practice makes better.  Ok, the saying is "practice makes perfect" but there is no such thing as perfect art.  I do know that my painting skills improved and I gained confidence throughout the month.

Thanks to all of you who followed me on my painting journey during the month of January.  As I said before, I appreciated everyone who took the time to write.

Best regards,

Laurie
